If you’re a homeowner in Coastal Virginia, you know our area can be hit by heavy storms. Virginia Beach, Hampton, Yorktown, and other neighboring cities are at risk of hurricanes and tropical storms that develop in the Atlantic, especially between June and November. So, if you’re in the market for replacement windows, choosing hurricane-rated, impact-resistant windows is a wise decision to protect your home.
Every replacement window on the market today must be tested for strength and durability. The DP rating, which stands for “design pressure,” indicates how well a window withstands structural load, water pressure, and wind pressure. As a standard for product performance, the window is assigned a numeric value based on the test results. These standards are set by the American Architectural Manufacturer’s Association (AAMA).
Residential replacement windows range from DP 15 to DP 50. Higher values indicate a stronger, better performing window. Most building codes today call for a window that is at least a DP 30. However, the DP requirement can be influenced by the building’s height, geographic location, and other factors.
As you shop for windows, be sure to ask about DP ratings, which are an important measure of product performance. Any replacement window company should be able to show you their DP ratings, backed by certified test results from an independent 3rd party.
All CVP window and door systems carry a Design Pressure (DP) rating of 50 or better. No matter which style you choose, you can be confident your home is protected by some of the most well-built, durable, and hurricane-resistant windows on the market today.

We chose CVP because we needed a window and patio door that could withstand the heavy wind and rains we get in Virginia Beach. I did a lot of research and was happy to find custom windows that were also hurricane-rated. Our experience was great. They were prompt and professional, and we didn’t experience a single service issue.
